FORTIFIED Standards Advisory

Build Stronger. Protect Better. FORTIFIED Advisory by Troy Pro.

FORTIFIED construction standards provide scientifically proven protection against wind, wildfire, and severe weather. Troy Pro guides projects through Bronze, Silver, and Gold certification for maximum resilience.

What is FORTIFIED?

FORTIFIED Home™ is a voluntary construction and re-roofing program developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) based on decades of scientific research. FORTIFIED standards provide system-level protection against severe weather—particularly high winds, hurricanes, wildfires, and hail.

Unlike basic building codes (which set minimum safety thresholds), FORTIFIED certification requires sealed roof decks, reinforced connections, impact-resistant materials, and ember-proof systems that dramatically reduce disaster damage and insurance claims.

FORTIFIED Bronze

Roof Protection
Sealed roof deck prevents wind-driven rain and ember intrusion. Minimum certification level.

  • • Sealed roof deck system
  • • Starter shingles at eaves/rakes
  • • Enhanced flashing
  • • Ring-shank nails

FORTIFIED Silver

Roof + Openings
Bronze requirements PLUS impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors.

  • • All Bronze requirements
  • • Impact-rated windows/doors
  • • Reinforced garage doors
  • • Protected openings

FORTIFIED Gold

Complete System
Silver requirements PLUS reinforced walls, foundation connections, and gable ends.

  • • All Silver requirements
  • • Reinforced wall connections
  • • Continuous load path
  • • Maximum protection

Why FORTIFIED Construction Matters

Proven Wind Protection

IBHS research shows FORTIFIED homes sustain 95% less roof damage in hurricanes and severe windstorms compared to code-built homes. Sealed roof decks prevent catastrophic interior water damage from wind-driven rain.

  • ✓ Withstands 130+ mph winds
  • ✓ Prevents shingle blow-off
  • ✓ Stops wind-driven rain intrusion

Wildfire Ember Defense

Sealed roof decks prevent windblown embers from entering attics—the most common wildfire ignition point. FORTIFIED Bronze is the foundation for California WUI (Wildland-Urban Interface) fire protection.

  • ✓ Blocks ember intrusion at roof deck
  • ✓ Prevents attic ignition
  • ✓ Complements fire-retardant coatings

Insurance Premium Savings

Many insurers offer 10-50% premium discounts for FORTIFIED certified homes. In high-risk areas, FORTIFIED certification may be required to obtain coverage at all.

  • ✓ 10-30% typical premium reduction
  • ✓ Up to 50% in hurricane zones
  • ✓ Improved insurability in fire zones

Resale Value & Marketability

FORTIFIED homes command premium resale prices and sell faster in disaster-prone markets. Certification is transferable and verifiable through IBHS registry.

  • ✓ Higher resale values
  • ✓ Faster sales in high-risk areas
  • ✓ Transferable certification

FORTIFIED for California Wildfire Protection

While FORTIFIED was originally developed for hurricane protection, its sealed roof deck system provides critical wildfire defense by preventing ember intrusion—the way 90% of homes ignite during wildfires.

How Embers Ignite Homes

  1. Wildfire generates thousands of windblown embers
  2. Embers land on roof surfaces and in attic vents
  3. Embers enter attics through unsealed roof deck gaps
  4. Attic ignition spreads to entire structure

90% of wildfire home losses are caused by ember ignition, not direct flame contact.

FORTIFIED Ember Defense

  • Sealed Roof Deck: Prevents ember entry through gaps in sheathing
  • Enhanced Ventilation: When combined with ember-proof vents, creates complete attic protection
  • Foundation for Fire Coatings: FORTIFIED + Sun Fire Defense/FS Pro = maximum wildfire resilience

FORTIFIED Certification Process with Troy Pro

1

Project Assessment & Planning

Troy Pro evaluates your project for FORTIFIED feasibility—new construction, major renovation, or re-roof. We recommend Bronze, Silver, or Gold based on your risk profile, budget, and goals.

2

Licensed Professional Connection

We connect you with FORTIFIED-trained architects, engineers, and contractors. Troy Pro coordinates the team but does not perform licensed construction work.

3

FORTIFIED Evaluator Engagement

A third-party IBHS-certified evaluator inspects the project at key milestones to verify FORTIFIED compliance. Troy Pro coordinates scheduling and documentation.

4

Construction & Inspections

Work proceeds according to FORTIFIED standards with evaluator site visits at roof deck sealing, opening installations, and final completion stages.

Certification Award

Upon final inspection approval, IBHS issues your FORTIFIED Bronze, Silver, or Gold certificate. This transfers with property sale and verifies compliance for insurance discounts.

FORTIFIED Cost Considerations

Typical Cost Premiums

  • FORTIFIED Bronze (New Construction): +1-3% of total construction cost ($3,000-$9,000 for $300K home)
  • FORTIFIED Bronze (Re-roof): +$3-$6 per square foot vs. standard re-roof
  • FORTIFIED Silver: Bronze costs + $5,000-$15,000 for impact-rated windows/doors
  • FORTIFIED Gold: Silver costs + $3,000-$8,000 for reinforced connections

ROI & Payback Period

FORTIFIED homes typically achieve positive ROI within 3-7 years through:

  • • Insurance premium savings (10-50% annually)
  • • Avoided repair costs from severe weather
  • • Reduced homeowner deductibles
  • • Enhanced resale value

In hurricane or wildfire zones, FORTIFIED certification may be required for insurance coverage, making cost comparison to uninsurable properties moot.
